Introduction to Blackjack Online

Blackjack has been a casino staple for centuries, with the game widely believed to have originated in French casinos in the 1700s. From there, blackjack exploded in popularity to become a global phenomenon, with Online Blackjack now one of the most-played and best-loved online games in the world.

Back in the 1700s, blackjack was still known as 21 – or Vingt-et-Un in those French casinos in which it found its feet – in reference to the object of blackjack being reaching a total of 21 without going over.

The casino game took on its current name of blackjack after a promotion believed to have been run in American gambling halls and casinos in the 20th century. Those gambling halls offered a bonus payout if an ace of spades was dealt alongside a jack of spades or clubs – a black jack. The bonus worked, the name stuck, and Online Blackjack has become one of the most iconic casino games on the planet.

Start Blackjack Online

The aim of Online Blackjack is simple. Beat the house dealer by getting as close to 21 as possible, without going bust by going over 21.

At the start of each hand, each player will be dealt two cards. From there, you have a few different moves you can make to try and get a total as close to 21 as you can:

  • Stand – this means you stick with the cards you have already been dealt and will not be dealt any further cards this hand. You can choose to stand at any point, for example once you’ve been dealt three or four cards, or even stand with your original two if you feel you have a good hand.

  • Hit – receive an extra card from the dealer. The card’s value is added to the ones you’ve already been dealt. It’s down to you to balance when to hit and when to stand, to get as close to 21 as possible without going over.

  • Double down – double your initial bet and receive an extra card from the dealer. This works the same as choosing to hit, apart from you choose to increase your initial stake. You might choose to double down if you believe the next card you receive will get you close to 21.

  • Split – if you are dealt two cards of the same value to start your hand, you can choose to split them and treat them as two separate hands. Your original bet goes on one of the pair, and you must match that bet on the other.

Remember, the aim of the game is to get as close to 21 as possible. If you get dealt an extra card that takes you above 21, then you are bust.

Jacks, Queens and Kings are worth 10. In Online Blackjack, an Ace is worth either 1 or 11, and the player can choose which value it will have.

If you are dealt an Ace along with any other card that is the value of 10 (a 10, Jack, Queen or King), then you have Blackjack (21).

When you decide to stand, the action moves over to the Online Blackjack dealer who will try to exceed or match the value of your cards, again without going over 21. The dealer must hit on any total below 16.

Once the dealer stands, the two totals are compared and the one that’s closest to 21 wins. If the dealer goes over 21, they go bust and you automatically win the hand. If there’s a tie, your stake is returned to you.

More about Online Blackjack

Every player has their own ways to play Online Blackjack, and the best way to judge your next move is based on whether the dealer’s face-up card is weak or strong.

Here’s how to judge the dealer’s face-up card:

  • 2-6 – weak

  • 7 or 8 – moderately strong

  • 9, 10, J, Q, K, A – strong

Once your cards are dealt it’s time to work out if your Online Blackjack hand is weak or strong when pitted against the dealer’s. This will inform you what option to take.

Remember, there’s always a chance of going bust in Online Blackjack, so sometimes it can be worth standing and allowing the dealer to run the risk of going over 21 and going bust themselves.

If you rate your hand as weak, it’s worth hitting and getting as close to 21 as you can. This is just one simple method that could help increase your chances of beating the deal when you play Online Blackjack.

FAQs

What are Online Blackjack odds?

Online Blackjack is played with a standard deck of 52 cards, so keep probabilities in mind while you play. For example, if your initial two cards have a total of 12 (for example, a 5 and a 7), then receiving another card worth 10 will cause you to go bust and lose the hand. The probability of your next card being a 10 are around 31%, whereas the probability of going bust from a total of 15 are much higher at 58%.

How can I increase my chance at blackjack online?

Online Blackjack is about more than the luck of the draw: your own skill and judgment also play a big role. Becoming a top Online Blackjack player may come with time and experience, but here are a few essential tips to get you started.

  • Know the rules: Make sure you’re familiar with the rules of the particular Online Blackjack game you’re about to play – check them out on the individual game’s page before you start.
  • Set your budget: we recommend you sit at any Online Blackjack table with no more than 3% of your total bankroll.
  • Know when to fold: Online Blackjack is a battle between yourself and the dealer. On some Online Blackjack tables, you will have the option to fold your original hand before drawing extra cards, with half of your original bet returned. If you don’t like your opening hand, surrender can be a solid option, knowing your next hand – which might bring a better opening two cards – is just moments away.
